VC signs Mission Veterans Memorial volleyball standout

MISSION – The Victoria College Pirates added the sixth player to their inaugural National Junior College Athletic Association team Tuesday by signing Mission Veterans Memorial setter Valerie De La Fuente to a letter of intent.

"I'm glad I have the opportunity to continue my volleyball and academic career," De La Fuente said. "I am excited to create unbreakable bonds with my teammates, become a better player, and I hope to represent my community well."

De La Fuente helped the District 31-5A Lady Patriots advance three rounds into the playoffs and compile a 39-5 record last season. She averaged 9.9 assists per set and added 47 service aces and 158 digs as a senior.

"I am excited to play at a higher level and be a part of the first team to ever play in the NJCAA," De La Fuente said. "I went to visit VC and had a chance to play with the team and I instantly knew I wanted to continue my volleyball career at Victoria College."

Victoria College will make its NJCAA debut at home on Aug. 22 against Wharton County College.
